Pee Problems

I'M NOT COMING OWT!

Blackie, you need to take your medicine if you want to get better.

I DON'T LIKE IT, AND I'M NOT COMING OWT!

*sigh* Blackie had to go to the vet several weeks ago because she was peeing all over the place and there was blood in her urine. Though she didn't have a fever, the vet did a urinalysis and said she had a bladder infection and gave her antibiotics. She HATED those blue pills! She fought and struggled and spit it out and bit me. I finally wised up and smashed the pills into powder and mixed it with some canned food. But the problem came back and now she has antibiotics in liquid form. I mixed it with her food again but she could taste it and didn't eat it all so I have to squirt it in her mouth. Now she runs and hides when she sees me because she thinks I'm going to squirt that nasty stuff in her mouth.

That's the first thing I learned when I got a cat -- they are entirely different in taking meds than dogs! Way more of a challenge.

I smash the pills and put them in chicken or ham baby food, or something they don't get very often. The liquid, well, usually more ends up on me than in the cat.
But if you can wedge the cat in a corner, get a second person to hold some of the thrashing paws and legs, you have a small chance of getting a tiny bit of liquid into the cat.
Get well, Blackie! Come on, give us a break and take the meds.

Aw, poor Blackie. My mommy had so much trouble giving me my pills, she finally bought a "pill gun" from the vet. It was only a couple of bucks and it makes life easier on all of us. It was the best thing she could've done.

It looks like a syrenge (sp?) and the pill goes on the end. Daddy holds me (in a towel) & tilts my head up and mommy opens my jaws with one hand and puts the pill gun toward the back of my throat and pushes the "syrenge" down. Since the pill lands on the back of my tongue, I'm forced to swallow it. Catching me is the hardest part, but the actual pill taking is less than 10 seconds no kidding.

I wouldn't take a pill or liquid in food or anything and before the gun it was a huge unpleasent wrestling match to get me to swallow the pill.

I always get stinky goodness after I take my meds so that helps too.
Feel better soon!!!!

Hi Blackie. I am very glad to meet you! I am having pee problems too! I started on Clavamox. Then I got sick again, and took Zeniquin. Then, I got sick again, and they took x-rays and found that I actually have bladder stones. Now I am on a special diet to try to dissolve the stones.

I take my medicine in Pill Pockets too. You should try them!

I am adding you to my links so I can see how you are doing little Blackie.

Blackie was so upset last night after I squirted the medicine in her mouth that I decided I would try to mix it with her food this morning. She was a good girl and ate every bit of it. About 10 seconds later, she started heaving and barfed it all back up! *sigh* So I had to catch her and squirt another dose in her mouth.

Poor girl! But Blackie, you must take it so you get all better! You don't want to get sick again and have to go BACK to the v-e-t, do you?! I found the easiest way to give liquid meds (pills are too hard) is to get on my knees and almost like straddle the kitty with it's back towards me. Then I grab their scruff, lift and stick the syringe in the side of their mouth and squirt! Voila! Well, most of the time it works and they can't scoot away and mostly stay calmer when you hold their scruff. Be a good girl, okay Blackie?!

Thanks Kat, I'll try that. My mom made the mistake this morning of flipping her over and holding her on her back while I did the squirting but this left all 4 feet available for kicking and scratching and Blackie got my mom with her back feet. I need to cut her claws again. She usually holds still for THAT.

Poor Blackie! Some months back I had to have a large bladder stone removed because I was having the same problem (blood in urine).

Mom's switched our food to mostly raw (Nature's Variety) and she adds distilled water to it. So far so good, because she got a plastic strip under me while I was in the litter box and I guess the ph color was the right one.
