Formerly Feral Blackie

It seems like we've had Blackie forever since she's about 16 or 17 years old. She's outlived 6 other cats and she's fairly healthy despite her recent bladder infection. I was talking to my sister Leona (the source of most of our cats) and didn't realize how close Blackie came to being put to sleep. She was a very friendly adult cat who lived near Leona's office with a bunch of other stray cats. Leona took her home but she was an outdoors only cat since she had 3 other cats in the house. Blackie had a litter of 2 kittens but 1 disappeared and Leona doesn't know what happened to it. One of her neighbors took the remaining kitten and Leona had Blackie spayed.

Then Leona and her husband moved to the Big Island where they were building a house. They took their 3 cats with them but left Blackie behind to be cared for by Leona's brother-in-law. However, when she came back for a visit, she realized how skinny Blackie had become and found out nobody was feeding Blackie. Leona's husband told her to take Blackie to the humane society but it was close to Halloween and the humane society won't adopt out black cats near Halloween. Despite this, Blackie was in the carrier on the way to the humane society when Leona suddenly took the off-ramp from the freeway and ended up at our house. So Blackie joined Emily, Molly and Shirley as our fourth cat. (Shirley was another of Leona's rescued cats and I'll tell her story in the future.)
